AI Tooling Engineer
About the Role
Prendio's business units are operationally effective at using Claude and Claude Skills in their day-to-day work. We're looking for an AI Tooling Engineer who takes that further: someone highly adept at more complex, higher-leverage Claude-based tooling, and who acts as an internal evangelist for it, building deeper understanding and utilization across our business units, not just engineering. This is a new, dedicated function reporting to the VP, Data Analytics.
This role will typically start where the Operations team and business owners define unmet business needs. They'll bring the project requirements, and you'll partner with them to sharpen and improve those requirements through the process of building the tooling they've requested, turning evolving asks into working internal tools backed by Claude Code, Skills, and MCP integrations. Much of that tooling will turn procurement, spend, and catalog data into measurable operational cost savings.
What You'll Do
Claude Code & Agentic Tooling
- Build and maintain custom Claude Skills and MCP integrations that go beyond the organization's current day-to-day usage, unlocking more complex, higher-leverage agentic workflows.
- Set up, configure, and maintain MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and connectors that give Claude Code and other agentic tools safe, reliable access to internal systems and data sources.
- Establish and document standards, guardrails, and review practices for how Skills and MCP integrations are built, tested, and rolled out across the organization.
- Serve as the organization's deepest technical resource on Claude-based tooling, well beyond the baseline proficiency already common across the org.
Claude Evangelism & Business Adoption
- Act as an internal evangelist for Claude and agentic AI tooling, driving greater understanding and utilization across business units beyond engineering.
- Run demos, workshops, or office hours that show business teams what's possible and help them apply Claude more effectively in their own work.
- Build relationships with business unit leaders to surface opportunities where AI tooling could meaningfully improve how their teams work.
Partnering on Requirements & Delivery
- Work with the Operations team and business owners who define project requirements, helping them sharpen and improve those requirements through the process of building the requested tooling.
- Translate evolving or loosely defined business needs into working internal tools, iterating with stakeholders as scope becomes clearer.
- Build internal tools and automations that pull from procurement, spend, and catalog data to surface opportunities for operational cost savings.
- Design lightweight internal dashboards, reports, and scripts that make cost and usage data actionable for the people who need it.
Tooling Strategy & Enablement
- Evaluate new AI tooling, models, and agent frameworks for internal use, and recommend what's worth adopting.
- Create documentation, examples, and lightweight training so both engineers and business teams can build on and extend Skills and internal tooling themselves.
- Maintain a library of reusable internal tooling components (Skills, MCP servers, scripts) so solutions aren't rebuilt from scratch each time.
What We're Looking For
Required
- 2-4 years of experience building internal tooling, automations, or data-driven applications in a professional software engineering environment.
- Deep, hands-on experience with Claude Code (or a comparable agentic coding tool) that goes beyond everyday use — demonstrated ability to build complex custom Skills and advanced agentic workflows.
- Experience setting up and configuring MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers or integrations to connect AI tooling to internal systems and data sources.
- Demonstrated ability to evangelize and teach AI tooling to non-technical stakeholders, driving adoption across business units beyond engineering.
- Experience partnering with business owners to sharpen loosely defined requirements through iterative, build-as-you-go delivery rather than a fixed spec.
- Experience turning operational or business data (e.g., procurement, spend, usage) into tooling that drives measurable cost optimization or efficiency gains.
- Strong scripting/programming ability in at least one modern language commonly used for tooling and data work.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, and comfort working independently to define and build a new internal function.
Nice to Have
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (not required — equivalent hands-on experience is welcome).
- Experience with SQL and/or data warehouse tools (e.g., Snowflake, dbt) for pulling and modeling operational data.
- Familiarity with procurement, supply chain, or life sciences operations data.
- Experience with other agent frameworks or LLM tooling (e.g., LangChain, custom agent harnesses).
- Prior experience running workshops, demos, or training for non-technical or cross-functional audiences.
